Nippon Moriage Blue-eyed Dragonware Vintage 5 Saucer Dishes & 1 Demitasse Cup, Made in Japan. Grey matte finish w hand-painted pastels of pink & blue then finished w raised Moriage. No cracks.
Dragonware is a Japanese exported porcelain decorated w dragons in a technique called moriage meaning "raised enamels". The effect has been likened to cake frosting. Dragonware dates from the 1880s and later.
Moriage is composed of liquid clay called "slip" that in this case was applied using a hollow bamboo tube. This is a laborious process often found on late 19th & early 20th Century Japanese ceramics.
This set would make a great addition to any collection of Japanese art. Obviously pre-owned & they need cleaning, I’m leaving up to you.
There are worn edges with dots or paint missing. Some Moriage has aging lines and the back of the plates have a little wear. At 75+ years old they are imperfect but highly collectible.
